Animal Research Minute - Could a new vaccine help dogs with cancer?

Well, an experimental vaccine developed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania is the first
veterinary cancer vaccine of its kind to show an increase in survival time for dogs with spontaneous non-
Hodgkin's lymphoma. The team recruited dogs with newly diagnosed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to
receive the experimental vaccine. Although the cancer eventually came back in many of the dogs, some
of the dogs are still alive and cancer-free more than 3 years later. This revolutionary cancer vaccine
shows that alternative cell-based cancer vaccines can be effective and could even be used in the
treatment of a number of different cancer types.
