South Carolina Recieves Monetary Award to Fight Obesity | | | Program 2386 (download mp3) Posted on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 |
Recently, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced a $1.6 million award to South Crolina as part of "Communities Putting Prevention to Work" program, a prevention and wellness initiative administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. SC Commissioner Hugh Weathers says that SCDA is involved in this project, having been awarded $500,000 to implement a statewide farm to school program. The idea is to provide healthier food systems in South Carolina for schools using Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certified farmers.
Commissioner Weathers says that providing food to schools farmers need to be GAP certified and that's one of the things we'll do with this funding--help farmers help themselves. For more news about GAP certification, click here...
