NC State Senator David Rouzer (Rep, District 12), was the keynote speaker of the Wake County Agribusiness Breakfast, which opened the Southern Farm Show on Wednesday.  He encouraged agricultural producers to get to know their elected officials and keep them educated on workable agricultural policy.  He noted there may be more political representation from urban areas as a result of recent redistricitng.

Jimmy Thomas, President of the NC Soybean Producers Association, hosted the association's annual meeting on Friday at the Southern Farm Show. The meeting focused on profitable grain marketing for 2012.

 

 

NC State University Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Johnny Wynn addresses the Wake County Agribusiness Council Breakfast in Raleigh, which kicked off the 2012 Southern Farm Show.  In his presentation, Wynn stressed the necessity of agricultural research to increase yields in order to feed a growing population.

NC State Economist Say Stay Sharp on Economic Issues


NC State Economist, Drs Mike Walden and Blake Brown were keynote speakers at Thursday’s Ag Development Forum during the Southern Farm Show at the State Fair grounds. Walden led off the duo speaking to the general economic recovery, and some of the reasoning behind higher commodity prices, explaining that actions by the Federal Reserve are playing a big role:

"There is a line of reasoning that says the more money the Federal Reserve has printed that has been effectively showing up in higher commodity prices. And so, if the Federal Reserve ever starts taking this money back -- which they have the power to do, which doesn't look like they're going to do any time soon, but if they did, and a couple of years down the road start taking this money back -- that could have an adverse effect on, depending on how you look at it, on commodity prices. That is commodity prices coming down. So this is something for you to keep your eye on."

Troxler Looks Foward in State of Agriculture Address


In his state of agriculture address on Thursday at the 7th Annual Ag Development Forum, NC Ag Commissioner not only looked back at the year that was in 2011…which he’s termed as the ‘year that got away’ but to the future. there’s several issues that either directly involve agriculture, or impact agriculture that the commissioner would like to see addressed. One of the things that the Commissioner would like to see movement forward on is upgrading of the North Carolina Ports at Wilmington and Morehead City.

NC Senator Encourages Ag Community to Get Involved in Political Process


At the opening breakfast for the Southern Farm Show, NC State Senator, David Rouzer was the keynote speaker. In his talk, he implored farmers and members of the agribusiness community to get involved with their representatives, saying that the future of farming isn’t going to be dictated from the seat of a tractor, but from the state and federal governments:
 

The Southern Farm Show continues today from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. The 7th annual Ag Development Forum kicks off at 10:00 am in the Holshouser building, where NC State economist Drs. Mike Walden and Blake Brown will speak on the state of the general and agricultural economy, then Commissioner Troxler will give his annual state of agriculture address.
Also at the farm show today, the North Carolina Pork Council annual meeting and conference is taking place in the Martin Building getting underway at 9:00 am.
 

NC Soybean Producers Promoting Uses for Soybeans at Southern Farm Show


Many state associations have booths at the Southern Farm Show. Kenneth Bartlett farms near La Grange, North Carolina, and was on hand yesterday to help with the North Carolina Soybean Producers Booth in the Exhibition Building on the State Fair grounds and he explains what their message is this year:

Government Working Against Us


At the opening breakfast of the Southern Farm Show, hosted by the Wake County Agribusiness Council, Sen. David Rouzer was the keynote speaker.  Senator Rouzer said that government plays a big role in agriculture:

Drought Concerns Common of Farmers at Southern Farm Show


While helping out with the North Carolina Soybean Producers booth at the Southern Farm Show, Kenneth Bartlett, who farms near La Grange, says there’s one common theme when visiting with farmers at the show:

"I can't say that's there's one any more outstanding more so than the drought that we've experienced for the last four years. The farmers are really concerned about this, this is something that we can do nothing about... there's a forecast for another year of drought so it is very predominant on the minds of farmers."

Standing Room Only at Kickoff Breakfast for the Southern Farm Show

It was standing room only, inarguably the largest crowd ever at the opening breakfast for the Southern Farm Show in Raleigh.  Keynote speaker NC Sen. David Rouzer encouraged the crowd to become more involved in the political process to keep agriculture safe.

Record Number of Exhibitors at This Year's Southern Farm Show


Today the Southern Farm Show kicks off with the opening breakfast, then David Zimmerman, President of Southern Shows and producer of the Southern Farm Show says that the NC State Fairgrounds are jam packed with exhibitors:

“We’ve got another great show, we’ve filled up all the buildings at the NC State Fairgrounds, and have more outdoor exhibits than we’ve had in a long time.”

Several other meetings and events are planned in conjunction with the Southern Farm Show, the first is the Ag Development Forum, the North Carolina Pork Council will be holding their conference in the Martin Building also on Thursday, and the North Carolina Soybean Producers are holding their annual meeting on Friday morning in the Marting Building, all on the State Fair grounds.

All that, plus over 500 agricultural related exhibits at the Southern Farm Show. The show gets underway at 9:00 Thursday, and runs through 4:00 pm  Friday.



 

Farmers from the Carolinas and Virginia utilize the Southern Farm Show to learn about new crop production practices.  Grain sorghum and rapeseed are two new crops causing a lot of buzz at this year's show.  Above, Lando Moore (left), a grower from Pembroke, NC, talks to Jeff Riddle, grower relations manager of Technology Crops International.  Moore has contracted with Tech Crops to grow 50 acres of rapeseed this year.  Moore is hoping rapeseed will be an alternative to winter wheat, especially in fields with heavy grass weed pressure.

The Ag Development Fourm, held Thursday at the 2012 Southern Farm Show attracted more than 400 ag producers and agribusiness professionals to learn about the current state of the ag economy and ag safety issues.

John Burt of Fuquay-Varina received the 2012 Wake County Young Farmer of the Year Award, presented by Wake County Extension agent Laura Visitors enjoyed the cornhole game provided by Husqvarna at their outdoor exhibit outside the Kerr Scott building.
