NC Commissioner Troxler: Spotted Lanternfly Confirmed in Third NC County

For the first time, the destructive spotted lanternfly has been detected in Rockingham County, making it the third county in the state where the pest has been found. Other sites are in Forsyth and Guilford counties.

  • For the first time, the destructive spotted lanternfly has been found in Rockingham County. That makes the third county in the state where populations of the pest have been found.
  • The new site is primarily located in Reidsville within a 2-mile area. Survey work is continuing to understand the size of the infestation and if it is in other locations in the county.
  • The pest had already been found in Forsyth and Guilford counties.
  • The spotted lanternfly is brightly colored and pretty, but it can be a serious threat to the wine and grape industries as it feeds on grape plants as well as over 100 species of plants including roses, maples and other landscape plants.
  • From late May through July, the spotted lanternfly will be bright red and about a half-inch in size.  From July through December, the lanternfly’s wings will be tan with black dots on them. There is also red and black on their wings and they are about one inch in size from head to wing tip.
  • Since the spotted lanternfly was initially found in Forsyth County in 2022, staff with the Plant Industry Division and the N.C. Forest Service have been busy surveying for the pest, which is known to easily hitchhike on vehicles and other equipment.
  • Because hitchhiking is the spotted lanternfly’s primary means for moving locations, staff will be focusing on locations that offer the greatest opportunities for movement to treat. Commercial properties and lots under development are prioritized for treatment.
  • We ask that residents keep their eyes out for the pest and report it if they find spotted lanternfly.
  • Take a photo of the pest and the site where you found it and submit it to us through our online reporting tool at www.ncagr.gov/SLF.
