Corn Crop Progress and Condition Update

The progress continues for this year’s corn crop, even with a mix of weather trends across the Corn Belt this past week.

“We’ve had a lot of rain in the western part of the Corn Belt, been trending drier further east,” USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says.

For the period ending August 10, Rippey reports:

“Corn reaching the dough stage, passing the halfway point during the week and reaching 58% of the acreage — exactly equal to the five-year average and also equal to last year’s progress at this time. Meanwhile, 14% dented by August 10 — one point ahead of the five-year average, but two points behind last year at this time.”

Corn crop condition overall is holding up despite the mixed weather.

“We saw a very small week-over-week net decline in condition, losing a point in the good-to-excellent ratings — now 72%. A week ago, that was 73%. But perhaps more importantly, we’re not adding any very poor to poor numbers — steady this week at 7%.”
