Pulse Crops and Planted Acreage

What does USDA’s latest look at pulses reveal about forecasted planted acreage and other trends? Planted acreage projected for pulses, dry beans, chickpeas, dry peas and lentils for this year, according to USDA research economist Wilma Davis, looks like this.

“Pulse plantings are up again in 2025, and we look at how those acre shifts are unfolding by state, by class, across market categories like price, trade and availability.”

Specifics on pulse planted acreage this year range from a 4% increase in dry bean acreage in 2024 to a 10% rise in planted dry bean acres from the prior year, among other categories covered regarding the U.S. pulse crops.

“Per capita availability is a proxy for what is available to be consumed domestically, and it reflects changes in domestic supply, trade and population size.”

With both dry bean and lentil per capita availability significantly up year over year.
