Farmers Must Have a Voice in Upcoming USMCA Review

With the U.S.–Mexico–Canada trade deal facing a 2026 review, ag leaders say farmers must have a strong voice.

Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith recently hosted USDA Undersecretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke Lindberg to hear from Nebraska producers. Top of mind for corn growers is the dispute they’ve had with Mexico, which had rejected white corn from Nebraska.

“Looking at this biotech corn dispute. Now, the Biden administration took two years to decide to formulate the panel for the dispute, and then that process took two years, including some months for language interpretation. I would say there’s an app for that. We shouldn’t need that much time, and that some of my input moving forward is let’s shorten that process.”

Lindberg says the administration is moving quickly on multiple fronts, and he said the North American trade deal has been a win.

“Farmers are winning because agreements like this are in place, and there’s a lot more big wins on the horizon. We’re very excited about a number of the agreements the President is negotiating right now.”

The USDA also announced a new three-point trade plan, including rapid-response trade missions and fresh export financing tools to boost farm sales abroad.
