Today marks National Agriculture Day, a time to recognize farmers, producers and agribusinesses that keep food on the table and drive one of North Carolina’s most important industries. To talk more about that, we’re joined by Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler. Commissioner, thanks for joining us.
“Well, I’m glad to be here and talking. And, you know, it’s the 250th anniversary of America this year, and farmers have been there every day of it. So I hope on March 24, our listeners will join me in celebrating National Ag Day. This year’s theme is ‘Together We Grow,’ and that’s pretty fitting as the country comes to 250 years.”
Well, you obviously — if you look back at our country’s history — agriculture was a major player in the country’s early days.
“It absolutely has been during the whole history of the United States, and it’s grown to the point that we export products around the world, help feed other countries, not only America. But without agriculture, there is no stability and no security. Good agriculture is national security.”
What are the best ways folks can support North Carolina agriculture?
“Well, the very best thing they can do is to buy local products. And we’re headed into the time of year when there’s going to be tons of local products available at roadside stands, pick-your-own operations and farmers markets. So go out, purchase local products and thank a farmer every day for being able to eat.”
Well, that sounds great. I think we can all get behind that. Anything else I missed on this, Commissioner?
“Well, you know, it’s not every day that we celebrate something like this, and it really does mean a lot. A farmer knowing he’s appreciated by the public because he is feeding them — that means a lot. So just thank a farmer, get to know the farmers in your community, and we’re going to keep feeding you.”
Well, Commissioner, happy National Ag Day to you, and we look forward to talking with you again soon.
