NC Commissioner Troxler: Peanut Grading Job Fairs

The department’s Cooperative Grading Service is looking to hire peanut graders for the upcoming peanut season. Twelve peanut grading job fairs will be held in Eastern NC starting mid-July. These seasonal jobs pay $15.50-$16 an hour with paid training provided.

  • Each year the Cooperative Grading Service, which is in our Marketing Division, holds a number of job fairs to hire temporary employees to grade peanuts.
  • The Marketing Division operates 43 buying stations across Eastern N.C. and typically hires around 275 temps to operate these stations.
  • We need that many people because peanuts are big business in North Carolina. In fact, we are the fourth largest producer of peanuts in the U.S., with harvest coming in October and November.
  • Federal law requires peanuts to be inspected and meet minimum quality standards before entering commerce.
  • Paid training is provided, so no experience is needed. Some workers return year after year, but we are always looking to find more people to do this job.
  • The job pays $15.50 to $16 an hour and it’s a great part-time seasonal opportunity for retirees or others that are looking for temporary work.
  • Applications are accepted beginning mid-July at the job fairs and training classes are held late August into September. Graders must pass a basic math aptitude test.
  • The job fairs kick off July 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cooperative Grading Service office in Williamston.
  • You will need to bring your social security card and state ID or drivers license with you to the job fair to complete an application and employment packet.
  • Other job fair sites are:
    • July 15 in Ahoskie,
    • July 16 in Weldon,
    • July 17 in Edenton,
    • July 18 in Tarboro
    • July 21 in Elizabethtown
    • July 22 in Kinston
    • July 22 in Warsaw
    • July 24 in Enfield
