N.C. Mountain State Fair wraps up a successful 2025 run

The 2025 N.C. Mountain State Fair concluded this past weekend under clear skies and warm temperatures, providing a picture-perfect backdrop for the annual event.

Fair Manager Sean McKeon announced Monday that 161,059 people attended this year’s fair — an increase of 9.3%, or 11,709 visitors, over last year’s total.

“There are a lot of ways to measure success, but seeing so many people here having a good time and making memories with their families and friends is what the fair is all about,” said McKeon.

The fair featured several highlights that generated excitement and community engagement.

In keeping with its commitment to fighting hunger, the fair again hosted its “We CAN Fight Hunger Day.” Fairgoers who donated five canned goods received admission in exchange. In partnership with Ingles, the event collected 26,223 pounds of food for MANNA FoodBank.

With attendance up, interest in competitions also grew. One crowd favorite was the debut of the Mullet & Mustache Competition, which McKeon said helped boost overall entries by about 1,000 compared to last year.

Two longtime supporters of the livestock show were inducted into the N.C. Mountain State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame. Marjorie Burton and Mike Corn were honored for their longstanding contributions. (To learn more about their inductions, click here.)

The Caps for Cancer and Covers for Cancer programs, sponsored by Novant Health, also saw record donations. Volunteers donated 1,506 crocheted or knitted caps — the most in the program’s three-year history — along with 254 warm covers. Items will be distributed to cancer patients through the Messino Cancer Center.

McKeon reflected on the event’s significance, particularly in light of recent challenges faced by the region.

“This year the fair had special significance as we approach the one-year anniversary of Helene.” McKeon said. “It was a blessing to see so many families and local businesses participating in the fair and getting some normalcy back in their lives. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience of the people of Western NC. It was a great feeling seeing the community come together to celebrate, especially after such a challenging year. We appreciate everyone who attended this year, and we look forward to seeing you all in 2026.”

The 2026 N.C. Mountain State Fair is scheduled for Sept. 11–20. Mark your calendars now.
