Sorghum Producers Take Trade Trip to Asia

The Texas Sorghum Producers recently took a trade trip to Asia to expand trade opportunities. Wayne Cleveland, the executive director of the Texas Sorghum Producers, said they’ve had some success in Vietnam.

“We were there two years ago and overheard a guy from Vinh (Hoan) 1, which is a big, private-owned feed company, had mentioned he wanted (delivery) speed that didn’t turn the flesh on his Pangasius, which is basically a catfish. We got him a load of sorghum, and he started crushing it and making pellets. So, we flew into Ho Chi Minh City, which is in the South — a lot of people call it Saigon — and called on him, and then called on more customers. We think we have a really good in there.”

While in Vietnam, the U.S. announced a trade framework agreement between the two countries.

“Of course, while we’re there, they announced the framework for the (U.S.-) Vietnam trade agreement. Sorghum got a little bad end of the stick. We got a little five percent tariff that we’re going to be able to probably work our way out of.”
